First I always found this newsletter about AI and tarot interesting: https://linksiwouldgchatyou.substack.com/p/fortune-favors-the-code

Second, and this is kinda sideways to your point, but I was playing around with Gemini asking about knitting because it's something I know a lot about and I was curious. I was surprised at how helpful it is- mostly suggesting videos and things you could find otherwise, but it also generated and sock and hat pattern that I didn't test but didn't have any glaring issues.

I landed that I can see the value but also it takes away the connection aspect. Like can it give a decent explanation of the difference between top down and toe up sock construction, yes but it doesn't have the joy of talking to someone who firmly believes that toe up sock construction is the only way to knit socks. Like even knitting youtubers etc everyone has their little quirks and preferences, and I just found talking to Gemini about it lacking. Like sure it can get you there but I still would recommending finding a local craft night etc and going that way.

Yes definitely! I have had a similar experience with the one time I tried using it for an astrology thing -- I knew it was exceptionally bad at interpretation in general, mostly because it doesn't seem to be able to generate a chart correctly, but I was curious if it could pull from specific sources.

It did a decent job of pulling from designated sources accurately, which I double checked using my own copies, but it obviously lacked any human connection and more surprisingly lacked the ability to kind of work out patterns across the tradition.

Of course, lots of this will only get more effective technologically, but it's kind of a hard pass as long as it's so damaging to the environment (which is more complicated than much media is reporting, but not complicated enough!).

Totally! Aside it is interesting Gemini (the only one I play with because I have a pixel phone) I think is much more locked down than others. Like knitting it would for anything more complicated than socks and hats refuse to generate patterns (and I didn't try to "vibe code" one because I find it incredibly tedious and at that point I would make my own patten.

But like I was watching Ghost Adventures and asked it what the ghost in my house would say and it was like I am a chat bot I can't speak to ghosts. You can get around it but it still has a massive disclaimer before getting into it. Same with "what is my curse" which I didn't go that far for the curse one but I assume would have the same generic list of possible reasons why a ghost or curse may exist.

I will say and this is totally aside, but two local art organizations used AI for poster design and I contacted both about it and I actually had a great exchange about AI and art with one of them. He passed on my comments and apparently I made him reconsider using AI in the future.
