"Ban Kòrsou!" (Let's go, Curaçao!)
🇨🇼🇨🇼🇨🇼
Did you think I forgot to send my newsletter this week? I bet you did! Because I did, I forgot.
I’d been drafting a newsletter about Jupiter moving into Leo before my friend Kate got to Philly, but then we were gabbing and making t-shirts to wear to the Curaçao v. Côte d'Ivoire and here we are, 11:11PM ET on Thursday, staring down the barrel of having to pay my brother money. Well, folks, we can’t let that happen.
So I’m sending another half-assed blog, written on my iPhone—you are welcome 🫶
Some recent thoughts…
It is very fun to watch sports, even if you only care about the sports themselves a little bit. I’ve been learning this ever since moving to Philadelphia, a place where you might see several people on any given day wearing a “philly tuxedo” which is when you wear merch from at least three different Philly teams. For example, when I wear my Flyers hat, my Phillies jersey, and my Sixers shorts, that’s me in my philly tuxedo. The thing about this kind of sports culture is that it really makes you feel connected. The city of New York discovered this seemingly for the first time recently when the Knicks won a lot of basketball games in a row. While I’m happy for them, it’s been funny to watch them behave as though they invented the concept of celebrating a sport.
Speaking of watching sports, the World Cup is specifically a lot of fun because it’s actually very beautiful to see teams from countries that are technically at war meeting up on a big green field and playing keep away with a soccer ball like children. Except they aren’t children, they’re some of the most beautiful men in the world.
Speaking of beautiful men, let’s all pour one out for all the hot people in the world. You might think I’m kidding, but I’m not, I’m serious and I don’t think I can blame my brain being boiled in the stands today for this nugget of insight. The reason I know I really believe this and not just when my brain is boiled is because I think it several times a day most days when I see hot people out and about. As Xtina says, you are beautiful in every single way, and I think that’s really beautiful.
Speaking of beauty, I was reminded by a friend recently of how striking a quilt can be. There are so many ways they can turn out and they tend to carry a lot more weight than the matting between the quilt top and quilt back. I highly encourage you to take a look at the Gee’s Bend Quilts if you haven’t or haven’t lately.
Speaking of weighty quilt tops, remember that quilt that A$AP Rocky wore to the Met Gala a few years ago? I know we’re mostly over the Met Gala (it does feel well past time), but when this garment showed up on the runway, wrapped around Rihanna’s man (who, fwiw, is also one of the most beautiful men in the world…), I was like, “Yes, that is art, fashion and art and craft all together, wow.” Even better once I learned the story behind the recycled quilt top and the family who rediscovered their grandmother’s handiwork when it showed up as integrated into a garment on the gala’s red carpet.
That’s all I got for tonight. Thanks for reading, sorry to my brother, maybe one day you’ll take my money, but not today.
Until next time,
Fred 🫡
