#12: What is there to say about Miss Trixie Mattel?

There are plenty of week ahead resources out there (the CHANI podcast is a good one), so I thought it might be more fun to read a focused interpretation of one dynamic in the sky.

The Sun moves into Cancer: Happy summer solstice! It’s fully miserable in Austin, something like a week of three digit temperatures and “real feel” days at 110° or more. This means the Sun is officially in Cancer, moving out of the airy mutability of Gemini and into the cardinal water sign. It indicates initiation of the wet (humid) part of the year. Two shower days and high AC. Summer storms and beach time and rivers before the drought weather lots of us get in July and through August. 

The Sun is now lighting up your Cancer house. Like watching a pot slowly boil (an activity that famously takes some time), pay attention to where Cancer sits in your chart and consider how that house’s topics are heating up. We’d expect that area of the chart to be personal, more private, an area you feel protective about. Cancer is ruled by the Moon which is the fastest moving, fastest changing planet** in the sky. It’s also the one that is nearest and most familiar to us on the ground. It’s a good time to consider what you keep to yourself or share with your closest people and what you present to the world like a crab’s shell, protective but, when outgrown, potentially restrictive. 

** not sure I’ve said this, but planet comes from the Greek planētēs which means something like wanderer. In astrology, all the faster moving bodies up there are planets. 

What is there to say about Miss. Trixie Mattel?

Planning to do some more overviews of publicly available charts. Let me know if you are curious about anyone! Unfortunately, I already checked and Raquel Leviss does not have a public birth time. 

Trixie Mattel is a drag queen, a singer-songwriter, a TV host/motel operator, and the comedic partner of Katya Zamolodchikova. She was eliminated early from season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race and then won season three of All Stars, but, similarly to Katya, her notoriety and success has mostly come outside of Ru’s soundstage. They share the extremely successful YouTube show UNHhhh, have toured internationally with multiple live shows, and their relationship difficulties were featured in Trixie’s documentary Moving Parts. She’s also a Virgo who can’t drive. 

The classic modern astrological expectation for someone with their Sun in Virgo would be that they’re nitpicky, potentially over analytical, a little judgmental. Kind of annoying if you’re going by the memes. These are broad strokes and don’t really translate to traditional Hellenistic perspectives. By reading through key points in her chart we can get a better sense of Trixie herself and also understand how much more nuance a full chart analysis gives.

Virgo is ruled by Mercury, mutable, and an earth sign. Virgo has a tendency of doing Mercury things (communicating, analyzing, accounting, trickery, making deals) in mutable (reactive, flexible, changing), earthy (real, material) ways. 

You can see the leap to the Type A office manager, but that is unquestionably shaped by modern, culturally specific (capitalist, duh) values. Like any values, they can be taken to extremes or carried in moderation. The traditional image of Virgo is the youth during the harvest who is sorting through the crop to separate the good food from the waste. Ideally, the person doing this would be discerning and have the ability to pay close attention and maybe even be a little Type A.

Trixie’s Virgo Sun is in her first house, her Rising Sign. This would underscore for her the importance of those Virgo ideals: work, self-motivation, attention to detail, responsibility. Additionally, we see Mars is present, lending additional fire and fuel. This isn’t a slow and relaxed Venusian Virgo, this is a “go, go, go” Virgo. We’d also want to consider how the ruler of Virgo, Mercury is contributing to the picture. If they were sitting in a sign like Aries, it would amp up that Martial energy, or, in Taurus, it would possibly lead this person toward pleasure. However, Trixie’s Mercury is sitting at home in Virgo. We can see this as another sign that this person really carries those Virgo traits close to the heart and also manifests them in the world. 

With Trixie’s Moon in Taurus in the 9th House, we see some interesting dynamics as well. The Moon generally is the planet that represents your emotions, your body, your experience as a living being. It’s connected to your history and your lineage, particularly the mother. Trixie is well supported by this Moon, exalted in Taurus, giving her a grounded emotional and physical experience in life. We see her relationship with her mother in her documentary and periodically in her YouTube videos. While we don’t know the ins and outs, we do know that it’s the primary family of origin relationship she has, not knowing who her father is. Despite the many challenges she faced growing up, we see Trixie’s optimism and general belief that things can and will only get better. Her Moon in Taurus is one of the points in the chart that supports this. 

Considering the impact of the Moon’s 9th House placement, I’d be curious to discuss Trixie’s systems of belief with her. She famously does not believe in a god figure and historically is skeptical of any higher power. In her words, “Just ‘cuz we’re all babies doesn’t mean there’s a sitter.” There are other meanings of the 9th House that do show up in her life (she’s a best selling author, she travels the world performing), but I wonder if her belief in herself might represent some kind of religious or devotional faith?

Finally, we can look at her Lot of Fortune sitting at 18° Gemini. The Lot of Fortune is a hypothetical point in your chart that comes from the locations of your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant point. Altogether, it represents three of the most important parts of the chart brought together and synthesized. It carries a lot of meaning, but very basically represents your “lot in life”, how your luck will turn out overall.

Vettius Valens, the 2nd Century CE astrologer, said “Since I want to make the topic of good fortune most secure and precise, I am moving on to the Lot of Fortune, the most influential and most potent place.” With Trixie’s Lot of Fortune in Gemini, the Mercury themes are again underlined. About this, Valens says, “Mercury, when allotted the hour or the Lot and in the Ascendant, makes men fortunate.” This describes Trixie’s success pretty well, building a successful makeup brand, media career, and loyal audience by the time she was thirty. Mercury, it’s worth saying, is aligned with youth and early activity. Mercury isn’t patient. 

Overall, Trixie is pretty close to “being a Virgo” in the modern astrological sense, even though she of course carries all the other signs within her chart. Her chart is a good example of how some people might resonate deeply with the sign their Sun is in while others don’t at all.
